Alexandra Grant became the subject of many headlines after she and her boyfriend Keanu Reeves attended the LACMA Art+Film Gala last month.
Many were surprised by Grant’s look since her hair is completely grey, although she is only 46 years old. Since many people like to dye their hair, some were puzzled by the fact that she wants to keep it gray.
Grant offered an answer to this question via a post on a popular social media platform. The artist acknowledged that her hair grayed prematurely while she was in her 20s, and she dyed her hair for a while before realizing that her body cannot tolerate the chemicals which can be found in the dyes. One of the posts included an article about a recent study that explored the harmful effects of hair dyes.

During the study, the researchers surveyed the medical records of more than 45,000 women and discovered that there is a direct correlation between permanent hair dye and breast cancer, especially among women of color.
It is important to note that the paper tracks patterns and trends that and a direct link was not established. However, it suggests that carcinogens can be encountered in beauty products, are used by a high number of people.
According to some members of the medical community, the results aren’t surprising since previous research inferred that chemicals found in hair dyes and hair straighteners have the potential to be dangerous for human health.
A controversy was sparked after the authors of the study referenced a previous paper that stated that hair products made for black women could contain a higher amount of dangerous chemicals. Keanu Reeves and Alexandra Grant have been friends for almost a decade. The pair worked on two books written by Reeves for which Grant provided the illustrations. She is also the founder of the grantLove project, which offers original artworks and supports arts NGOs.
