During its Unpacked launch-event stream, Samsung unveiled the all-new Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Fold 3 smartphones.
Foldable smartphones haven’t been very popular in the past few years due to the high prices and unusual design. However, Samsung is now pushing for their foldable phones to go mainstream with a slightly reduced cost and better materials for increased durability. In addition to using sturdier materials, Samsung has also added water resistance but not dust resistance to its new set of foldable smartphones.
While the price reduction from previous models is welcome, these phones are still pricier than most, with the Z Flip 3 starting at $1,000 and the Z Fold 3 at $1,800.
The Fold 3 sports a 6.2in display which can reach 7.6in when unfolded into a tablet. The device will also include special tablet features in applications to benefit from the larger display in addition to support for two different S-Pen styluses.
Samsung has also hidden the selfie camera underneath the screen making it practically invisible to users.
On the other hand, the Flip 3 is a smaller offering with a 6.7in screen which can be folded in half for easier storage in pockets and small bags. The Flip 3’s cover screen size has increased drasticly in order to introduce more advanced features than displaying alerts. New camera features have been added to the cover screen such as dual preview and quick shot modes.
Preorders for both the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 have already started, with both phones set to hit shelves on August 27. Samsung will also be releasing a new range of accessories such as the Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Watch 4 on the same day as well.
