Researchers Made a Surprising Discovery Under the Thwaites Glacier

A team of researchers wanted to learn more about the Thwaites Glacier, one of the largest in the world. To do so, they used an advanced underwater robot that the at a depth of more than 700 meters below the thick layers of ice.

Thwaites have been called doomsday glacier due to the accelerated pace at which it is melting, and the robot made a grim discovery as even at a low depth, the temperature of the water is above the freezing level by two degrees Celsius.

This fact is quite alarming since it proves that the melting process will continue in the long run. The disappearance of massive glaciers like Thwaites is a significant risk for many areas since the level of the sea will continue to rise. It the thought that Thwaites alone contains a mass of water that is on par with that of the US state of Florida, representing up to 4% of a potential global sea-level rise.

A discovery made underneath Thwaites Glacier surprised the scientists

If Thwaites Glacier melts completely, the sea-level could rise by one meter, putting coastal communities at a high risk since the lands would be lost forever.

The new data traveled in an area which is known as the grounding zone, in which ice is caught between the bedrock and the ocean on which it floats in the form of an ice shelf. According to one of the researchers who contributed to the study, the temperature of the water in that area is quite unusual, and it is theorized that an unstoppable retreat has already begun.

It was also mentioned that the presence of such warm waters can is a clear signal that global warming and climate changes are more dangerous than ever, and more should, to control the phenomena before dire consequences appear in the future. More data can be found in a paper published in a scientific journal.
