New Species of Tyrannosaurus Rex Was Found in Canada

A tyrannosaur is a group of species of dinosaurs that walked the Earth millions of years ago, way before humans did. It is a genus of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaur. If you are still unfamiliar with the ‘tyrannosaur’ term, maybe T-Rex will ring the bell as it is one of the most known of the tyrannosaur species.

Canada’s ground just unveiled a new species of tyrannosaur that lived throughout North America around 80 million years ago, scientists are saying.

The newly discovered species of dinosaurs is also the most ancient type of its kind to have walked the ground of North America in the late Cretaceous Period. If we looked back in 1970, Canada unveiled another species of tyrannosaur called Daspletosaurusm, according to the research.

The newly discovered species help scientists to shed more light in regards to the evolution of tyrannosaurs. The new species of dinosaurs was a massive creature, towering about 8ft (2.4m) tall.

Similar to its relatives, the intimidating predator was a part of the carnivorous dinosaur category with look-alike features. The new species of dinosaur featured a long, broad snout. Its skull had bumps and large teeth similar to steak-knife measuring more than 7cm (2.7in) long.

What is the name of this new intimidating predator? Scientists named it Thanatotheristes degrootorum, which literally means “Reaper of Death” in the Greek language.

“We chose a name that embodies what this tyrannosaur was as the only known large apex predator of its time in Canada, the reaper of death,” said Darla Zelenitsky, a palaeobiology professor who co-authored the study. “The nickname has come to be Thanatos.” Thanatos’s fossils discovery
Fragments of Thanatos’s fossilized skull were found in southern Alberta back in 2010.

“The jawbone was an absolutely stunning find,” said Mr. De Groot, a farmer and paleontology enthusiast. “We knew it was special because you could clearly see the fossilized teeth.”
