Chad Stahelski is attached to direct a film adaptation of the hugely popular Ghost of Tsushima video game. A report by Deadline has revealed that Sony Pictures and Playstation Productions are developing the film.
Ghost of Tsushima is a Playstation exclusive title developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game tells the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai who has lost his clan, who must learn to let his past go in order to fight for freedom in Tsushima.
The game sold more than 2.4 million units in its first three days, making It the fastest selling first-party original IP debut in the Playstation 4’s history. It also garnered high praise from game critics, earning several nominations at the Game Awards 2020, including Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and Best Game Direction. Voice actor Daisuke Tsuji was also nominated for Best Performer.
87Eleven Entertainment will produce the film alongside representatives from Playstation Productions. Sucker Punch will be involved in the project as Executive Producers.
The Ghost of Tsushima film won’t be the first game-to-film adaptation to result from the collaboration between Sony Pictures and Playstation Productions. However, it will be the first that isn’t based on a Naughty Dog property. The two companies are working together with HBO to create a TV show based on The Last of Us video game series. Additionally, the Uncharted film has completed filming and entered the post-production stage, with a release date of February 11, 2022.
For now, Stahelski will be jumping back into the John Wick universe as shooting for the fourth installment in the gritty action franchise is about to begin. To date, the John Wick series, which stars Keanu Reeves, has proven to be a box office darling, raking in more than $600 million worldwide.
